Ann S. Masten, Ph.D.

Bio

Ann Masten is Regents Professor Emerita at the Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota Twin Cities. She has studied risk and resilience in human development since she came to the University for her Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Professor Masten has conducted research with children and families who have experienced many kinds of adversity, including homelessness, war, disaster, and migration, as well as ordinary school children who have experienced stressful but common adversities such as poverty or family violence. Her publications on resilience in children are among the most cited in the world literature. Dr. Masten has published more than 300 scholarly works, including books, journal articles, and chapters. The 2nd edition of her book on resilience, Ordinary Magic: Resilience in Development, was published in 2025 by Guilford Press. She is a Past-President of the Society for Research on Child Development and the recipient of many awards for her contributions to science and practice, including the the 2024 Grawemeyer Prize for the idea of ordinary magic in resilience and election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Masten created this MOOC in 2014 with additions in 2016 and she continues to follow and contribute to the discussion forums.
